Celebrating True Freedom

Can you believe July 4th is already upon us?  Let the celebrations begin!  An entire week of events is planned which include concerts, rodeos, reunions, fireworks, and a parade.  Dickinson knows how to celebrate Independence Day.  We call it Independence Day in celebration of our national sovereignty.  The United States is independent.  We won our independence through the shedding of blood in battle, and we still defend our independence with the blood of our military.

Freedom is never free.  It comes at a terrible price.  As a former military man, my heart is moved at the sight of our flag.  The American flag is always my favorite part of the parade.  This is the same flag I saluted countless times.  It is the same flag that represents the riches we enjoy in America.  It is the flag that leads our troops into battle, and those red stripes almost take my breath away.  My freedom was purchased by the blood of men and women who represented me in battle, and I pray to God on behalf of the families of the warriors who paid the price.

Warriors are often misunderstood and unappreciated, but God loves warriors.  King David was a mighty man of war and yet God said David was a man after God’s own heart.  David’s military exploits were extraordinary.  He made a habit of winning decisive victories on the battlefield.  However, there was one enemy that King David could not defeat.  That enemy was sin.

King David was born into sin.  We are all born into sin that separates us from God (Romans 3:23 and Isaiah 59:2).  No man is capable of defeating sin on his own.  We would be hopeless if it weren’t for the grace of God, for while we were yet sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).  Christ died for sins in order to bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18), but we must believe.  In other words, we must acknowledge Jesus as Lord and trust in Him alone for our salvation.  This is the truth which sets men free.  Jesus said in John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

On this American Independence Day, I am celebrating my dependence on Jesus Christ.  I am fully dependent upon Him for my salvation.  My freedom from sin came at a price.  It was bought by His blood on the cross, and I am free indeed.

Romans 8:2 – “For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”
