Hunting deer is one of my great joys of North Dakota living. I enjoy every moment in the field. I have sat in camouflage and had wild animals walk nearly into my lap. I have seen bucks battle for mating rights. Driving to work recently provided me a new sight to behold. I watched a pair of twin fawns suckling on a doe. Immediately this Bible verse came to mind, “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God (Psalm 42:1-2).” Like these little deer, I want to be thirsty. I want to thirst for God and find satisfaction in His presence.
1 Peter 2:2-3 says, “Like newborn babies long for the pure milk of the word so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.” I have three daughters, and all three came into this world with a deep hunger. They cried for milk and would not settle for anything else. I had a similar cry when I was born again. Like a newborn baby I hungered for the Bible as my spiritual sustenance. As I read the Bible, it tasted good to my heart and my soul cried for more.
Friends, how healthy is your appetite? Do you hunger for Word of God? Or have you ruined your appetite with the junk food of this world? It is not too late to establish a healthy diet of reading the Bible and enjoying the presence of God. Taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Feast upon His Word and find renewed vigor in your spiritual life.
Jeremiah 15:16 – Your words were found and I ate them, and Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I have been called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.
