I have heard people refer to a football offense as potent when it cannot be stopped. A potent offense has the power and ability to move up and down the field with relative ease. Potent means having great power, influence or effect. Our triune God is the epitome of potent, and His potency extends far beyond anything so trivial as football. In fact, our God is omnipotent. God, and God alone, has complete power and authority.
There is no limit to God’s power. He has the ability to do anything. The only limit to God’s activities is His own choosing. God chooses according to His will, and nothing restricts God from accomplishing His will. We will not always understand God’s will, and we are often confounded by His timing. It is natural to find ourselves asking, “Where is God when I need Him?” or “Why hasn’t God done anything yet?” But take heart, God never stops being God. His ways are always good, and His timing is always right.
There is also no limit to God’s authority. He is the boss of everything and everybody. The only limit to God’s freedom is His own character. God always operates within His nature. This is one reason God’s people read their Bibles regularly and gather together to study the Bible deeper. We want to know God better. We hunger to understand who God is and how we may better honor Him according to His character. Godly people prefer clear understanding of Biblical truth more than old wives’ tales and empty stories. There are gifted speakers who can tickle ears, but I prefer the Scriptures every time. I want to know God. I need to know God. Knowing God helps me trust God during difficult times. I have found my faith increasing as I know God better.
There is no limit to God’s goodness. Omnipotence does not refer to His goodness, but the truth of God’s goodness brings balance to His power and authority. God is omni-good. He is the very definition of perfection, and we are fortunate. How fortunate for us that our omnipotent creator God is also humble and merciful.
I am a pastor. People look to me for answers and direction, but there are times when I run out of answers. Some situations are beyond explanation. Those are times when I remind myself God is omnipotent and good. Omnipotence is scary without goodness. Goodness is worthless without omnipotence. But our God is both omnipotent and good.
Psalm 97:9-12 – For You are the LORD Most High over all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods. Hate evil, you who love the LORD, Who preserves the souls of His godly ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Light is sown [like seed] for the righteous and gladness for the upright in heart. Be glad in the LORD, you righteous ones, and give thanks to His holy name.
